More than the 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. All human activities have a significant impact on the well-being of the ocean and consequently of our entire planet. Every individual can contribute to save the ocean by practicing simple but virtuous actions.
What If Your Vacation Got a Little Entangled?
Imagine you’ve just arrived at a luxury vacation spot on the Mediterranean Sea, a trip you have been dreaming of for years – the pure white sand, crystal blue water and a cloud-free horizon that seems to go on forever. You set up your beach chair and towel, sit back and drift off to the subtle sound of the waves feeling stress free and mindful of the beauty the sea evokes. Of course, that is until you awake to the sound of plastic bottles rustling at your toes that are now wrapped in abandoned fishing nets. Not exactly the “dream vacation” you had expected, right?
The fact of the matter is that this scenario paints an authentic picture of what is happening to the world’s oceans and seas.
A Partnership for Ocean Sustainability
KAMPOS has partnered with One Ocean Foundation to further its commitment to sustainability and raise awareness on the issue of marine litter: plastic bottles, fishing nets and other non-biodegradable products. The mission of One Ocean Foundation is to accelerate solutions to ocean issues which is consistent with KAMPOS’ vision for a cleaner planet.
Although the exact amount of plastic in the oceans cannot be accurately quantified, it is estimated that 150 million metric tons of plastic circulate in the world's oceans. An additional 8 million metric tons are added annually. It is estimated that 250 metric tons of plastic will be in the oceans by 2030, and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Not only is plastic piling up in the oceans but is also causing more harm to marine animals than any other element. Aquatic animals are becoming trapped in fishing nets at an increasingly staggering rate, while thousands more are mistaking plastic and microplastic for food, over 70% of deep ocean fish have ingested plastic also due to the scarcity of food in the deep sea.
One of the reasons KAMPOS joined One Ocean Foundation is to support them in their objective: accelerating solutions to ocean issues by making international leaders, institutions, companies and the public aware of the blue economy and the culture of sustainability.
Moreover, the Foundation aims to become a leading platform to bring together and strengthen the voices speaking out for the ocean around the world with the common mission of protecting the ocean.
The distinctive features of the One Ocean Foundation are its scientific scope, its strong educational drive, and its strong link to the business world, enabled by its network of companies. These characteristics are instrumental to increasing awareness and establishing constructive relationships between all stakeholders of several age groups engaged at different levels in marine preservation.
One Ocean Foundation develops specific projects to help safeguard marine ecosystems. One of its first projects was the Charta Smeralda, an ethical code of conduct developed with the Foundation’s Scientific Committee aimed at sharing and disseminating marine preservation principles and actions to safeguard the marine environment. Through the Charta Smeralda, individuals, stakeholders and communities are informed of the urgency to resolve problems related to the marine ecosystem, with the aim of defining concrete and immediate solutions.
One Ocean Forum
One Ocean Foundation originated from the One Ocean Forum in 2017. It was the first forum organised in Italy on the subject of marine protection and was realised in partnership with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Following its success, the One Ocean Foundation was founded in February 2018.
The aim of the Forum was to encourage sharing, cooperation and awareness, dedicated to environmental sustainability. The Foundation’s ongoing aim has been to open an international dialogue on the sustainability of the oceans, creating a network of eco-friendly influencers, identifying best practices and raising awareness of themes and issues of the marine ecosystem.
In line with the increasing and ongoing international debate about ocean sustainability, One Ocean Foundation identified four key issues related to the protection of the marine environment and proposed a series of concrete actions to define paths that can promote marine preservation:

The increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, broadly determined by human activity, also corresponds to an increase in carbon dioxide dissolved in the oceans. This process of progressive acidification of water influences food on the chains, well-being and conservation of ocean habitats.
Consolidated maritime activities, such as shipbuilding and repair, offshore oil and gas repair transport, as well as blue biotechnology, aquaculture, renewable ocean energy, contribute to the blue economy. One of the key challenges for a more innovative maritime economy is to make it easier to transfer research results to and the implementation of new technologies in the commercial and industrial-scale sectors.
Ocean literacy means spreading knowledge on the influence oceans has on our lives and the influence our actions have on the ocean enabling citizens, economic players and stakeholders to make responsible and informed decisions concerning marine-related issues and increasing acceptance of marine policies. It is an approach based on fundamental principles that includes education and communication actions necessary to promote a culture of protection of the marine ecosystem. Ocean literacy is an initiative recognized by the United Nations.
